Our Governors

A message from our Chair of Governors

I am the chairman of St. Augustine’s Governors. Some of you may not know that our school has governors, and many of you may not know what governors do. I would like to tell you a little about them and what they do. It is important first to explain what governors do not do. It is not the job of governors to get involved in the day to day running of the school. That is the responsibility of the Head and her leadership team. If you do have a concern about your child or our school you should contact your child’s class teacher or the Headteacher.

If the governors do not get involved in the day to day management of our school then what do they do? The overriding responsibility of governors is to drive forward our school’s vision of providing the highest quality education to its pupils within a Catholic ethos. They do this in a number of ways.

First, governors set the strategic goals for the school. These goals are set out in the School Improvement Plan and relate to such matters as the quality of education and pupils’ personal development.

Secondly, governors hold the Head and her leadership team to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils and for achieving the goals set out in the School Improvement Plan. Governors do this by monitoring visits to the school, by reading reports about the school and by asking challenging questions of the Head at governor meetings.

Thirdly, governors ensure that the school uses its resources effectively.

Fourthly, governors ensure that all obligations imposed on our school by law are discharged. For example the school’s responsibilities relating to the safeguarding of pupils and staff.

Finally, governors support and promote the Catholic values of the school. The educational vision which flows from these values is one which promotes the dignity, self esteem and full development of each pupil as a human being made in the image and likeness of God.

Governors are unpaid volunteers who do their best to support the school and above all want the school and its pupils to succeed. You as parents have the opportunity to be a governor. Two places are reserved for parent governors. When there is a vacancy, elections are held for a new parent governor. Please consider standing when the next vacancy arises. You will find being a governor is very rewarding.
